Aphids are a type of sap-sucking insect, commonly known in the UK and other Commonwealth countries as plant lice or whiteflies. These small insects belong to the taxonomic superfamily Aphidoidea. While many species are green, others appear in different colors such as woolly white or black-and-white—like the black-and-white aphid commonly found on broad beans.
Aphids are among the most destructive pests affecting cultivated plants in temperate regions. Their feeding activity damages plants, making them one of the biggest enemies of farmers and gardeners worldwide. From a zoological perspective, aphids are considered a highly successful group of organisms in terms of adaptation and survival.
